Intrusion on Native American Burial Grounds
(and more)

Highway 131 cut through
a hill, south of LaFarge.
Highway 131 used to go around this hill three miles south of
LaFarge. Burial mounds were situated along its crest. The WDOT
(Wisconsin Department of Transportation) relocated the remains
and artifacts that it could find before bulldozing this roadcut.
Everything else was used as fill for highway approaches. Also,
the fill elevated new highway crosses floodplain and acts like
a dyke restraining flood water during floods.
The proposed new highway between Rockton and Ontario will cut
through the Upper Kickapoo Valley Prehistoric Archeological District
with over four hundred archeological sites.
