The Highway Cuts Through State
Park and Reserve Land
The Federal Highway Administration and the Wisconsin
Department of Transporations (WDOT) will tell you that the proposed
Highway 131 reconstruction (into a major truck route) "will
not cross areas that are developed for Park, Recreation, Wildlife
of Waterfowl Refuge." But this is not true. Here are
just a few of the locations that the new highway will cut through:
- Wildcat Mountain State Park
- The Kickapoo Valley Reserve - scheduled to become a park;
- The Upper Kickapoo Valley Prehistoric Archeological Distrcit
(over 400 archeological sites); - learn
how the WDOT has handled this issue in the past
- The national natural landmark area known as the Kickapoo Valley
Natural Area;
- Areas included on the National Rivers Inventory;
The unique driftless landscape is also home to 18 endangered,
threatened or critical speicies - all this in just six short
miles of road!
