Mission/Thrift Store - Arcadia

The Mission/Thrift Store has now put out Fall and Winter attire. Come to find warmer clothing including sweaters, sweatshirts, long sleeve tops, coats, snow pants, gloves/mitten, scarves, etc. All articles are displayed by size so it is easy to find what you need. Thanks to all for the many donations we receive. Your contributions are gifts shared with others. Special thanks for providing clothing and items that are clean and ready to use/display. When large furniture is available we help make the connection between contributor and receiver.

Faith Development by Age

“Before children observe and study anything else, they observe and study their teacher.” Ages 6-12 The elementary years are a time of tremendous growth and earning. Elementary-age children are very concrete in their thinking, so faith concepts should be communicated to them in simple, concrete terms, and any abstract concepts illustrated with something from their own experience. This is the example of Christ, who used concrete metaphors such as fishing, tending sheep and sowing seeds when teaching about God’s kingdom. Children in the elementary grades are quite conscious of rules, making this an ideal time to teach morality from the stand-point of God’s guidelines for our behavior. This will lay a foundation for conscience formation at a deeper, more abstract level as they mature. As children progress through the elementary years, peer relationships become increasingly important. While parents are still the “primary catechists,” children this age benefit greatly from learning about faith in a community of peers.         Coming Next Week...Ages 13-18

From the Pastor

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This weekend we celebrate throughout the Church “Respect Life Sunday”.  Every year on the first Sunday in October we are called upon to meditate on the fundamental duty of every Christian to defend the dignity of the human person, made in the image and likeness of God, from the moment of conception until their last natural breath.

In an election year this can be a contentious thing since many see it as a political issue.  Of course, we understand clearly that it is fundamentally a moral issue which has become politicized by governments who have forgotten that laws which are just must follow from the natural law that God has written into creation and which can be known by all people of good will even without knowledge of God’s revelation.  Knowledge of God’s revelation puts an added obligation however on those of us who have been enlightened by Christ.

Of course, even politically, our founding documents have recognized that the right to life is the first of those inalienable rights granted by our creator and therefore not dependant on the good graces of any governmental body.  In fact, our Declaration of Independence states that when our rulers forget this we have the right to remind them of it, even to rebel against their right to govern.

Sadly, some people see this as being only about “babies”.  That would be reason enough to rebel, but in the last 20 years it has become about the rights of the elderly and the disabled as well as the rights of those who would be “created” in order to provide the raw material for other’s physical and mental well-being.  This is really no less ghoulish than if we were hacking up adults for parts…wait, that’s being done in some parts of the world.

Politicians, especially those claiming to be Catholic, have shown no little cowardice in defending the rights of these most vulnerable in our society.  They have shown a great deal of hubris in re-directing our attention with all manner of specious arguments.  So what are WE doing about it?

I would like to be able to say that anyone voting for a pro-abortion candidate had better be on the line Sunday for our annual Life Chain and should also be writing to these candidates to let them know that they need to reconsider their position on these important life issues.  However, the fact of the matter is that we must ALL be doing this as a matter of responsible citizenship.

I do hope that many of you will choose to join me and others to stand for life either along HWY 93 or at St. Stanislaus Church where there will be a Eucharistic Holy Hour for Life.  And please pray for the conversion of our legislators and civil officials as they form our public policies relating to these most fundamental issues of our time.

                                 Pray Well!                                                     Fr. Klos
