The small river town of Desoto straddles the counties of Vernon and Crawford. This site on the Mississippi was a French trading post for about 20 years. It was known as Winneshiek's Landing after a Winnebago Indian Chief who came here regularly to exchange furs. The first settlers were from several French families. The name of this town was given from the Spaniard who discovered the Mississippi.
