The Three Stages of Love

  1. The initial contact with Love energy is usually the love of a thing or a person. This is the focus on an external object as a chief source of enjoyment. In the realm of pleasure and pain, it is the seeking of the ideal device for providing constant pleasure. This can lead to fanaticism and a losing of oneself in the object of our attention. When we feel the need to validate or complete ourselves with external means, we have focused our love nature on that which we feel we lack. Therefore the first stage of love corresponds to the attraction and repulsion of the mineral kingdom as the force of gravity on a planetary level. When this type of love is experienced by humans, the relationship is usually one sided and dependant on the usefulness of the partner as a vehicle for pleasure or validation. As likes attract, individuals of similar needs can fulfill each other’s requirements for pleasure or pain.
  2. To be IN love with a person or an ideal brings the love experience to a more inclusive and personal level. In this stage the need to receive love is replaced by the urge to give love to a chosen person, people or cause. The loving takes precedence over the need for self. It is a taste, although limited, of unconditional love. Love in this way is its’ own reward, for it brings us in contact with a part of ourselves which we share with the Divine. This type of love must emanate from the heart of the lover. This means to know and love ourselves is a prerequisite for the selfless love of others. Although selfless, this type of love is still singular because of the fixed point of attention. For some it is a springboard into the third stage of love.

3. The stage of BEING IN LOVE has far reaching effects on all parts of our experience. In this state of being in love without a specific target for our love, we find we can love all of life as a whole. Wherever we turn our attention we feel the unconditional link with our surroundings. This state of awareness initiates a state of bliss (no specific pleasure) in the physical body. Loneliness, fear and regret are no longer a part of our experience. They are replaced by the feeling of being constantly being held securely in the hands of the Infinite. This is the level of love that holds creation together. It is Gods’ Love as it manifests in the worlds of thought, word and deed.
