What is Soul Loss & Retrieval?

When any kind of trauma occurs, it is a natural response to dissociate in order to survive. Part of the life force or 'essence' leaves. Sometimes this life force cannot or will not return. This causes the phenomenon known as Soul Loss. A sense of self and vitality is gone. Aspects of a person, talents, memories, etc. are missing. Since there are no voids in nature, something always comes to fill in these spaces. People with Soul Loss often have a sense of observing reality, are prone to addictions, destructive behavior patterns, illness, especially immune system difficulties. Excessive Soul Loss can cause coma and death.

How is a Soul Retrieval done?

Soul Retrieval is a very ancient form of spiritual healing, an active form of prayer. It involves a ritual and a process of journeying to track, find, heal, and return the lost or missing Soul Parts. There are different methods, and practitioners may vary in their techniques to fit their own and their clients' particular needs. In general, there is a prayer to call in Spiritual help and guidance. The practitioner will put themselves into an altered state of consciousness and leave their body to journey out on behalf of the client. A Shaman will usually interview a client first to understand their concerns and request for a healing. Please invite others, family and community, you feel safe with, to support and welcome home your Soul Parts.

What can a client do to prepare?

It is helpful to be informed about Shamanism. Reading books such as Soul Retrieval by Sandra Ingerman or The Way of the Shaman by Michael Harner are recommended. What is not working in your life and why you are asking for a Spiritual healing? What qualities and aspects of your life do you feel are missing? What is your intent in you healing request? Please be drug and alcohol free for 24 hours before a Soul Retrieval. Ask for a dream the night before. Please do not wear perfume or other strongly scented products.

What happens after a Soul Retrieval and is any follow up work needed?

It takes about 12 - 24 hours after a Soul Retrieval to fully integrate the parts returned. It is important to allow yourself some safe nurturing time after a Soul Retrieval. It can sometimes take up to two weeks of adjustment for the new aspects and energies to settle in and begin operation within the whole person again. Usually it is no longer than that, although it can require up to a year to fully integrate all that these Soul Parts have returned with. It is unusual to have another Soul Retrieval right away. Often after the initial Soul Retrieval, other Soul Parts will return on their own. Sometimes another Soul Retrieval can be helpful especially if someone has experienced a great deal of trauma and fragmentation.
Reading Sandra Ingerman's book 'Welcome Home' is a good resource for information. Soul Parts often bring changes and have requests and requirements that may include change in diet, behavior, relationship, and interests. Each person's experience will vary. Some experience immediate and dramatic change while others notice a much more subtle change over a longer period of time. The gifts and the responsibility are placed back into your hands. It is helpful to work with other practitioners and therapists while exploring and undergoing the healing process that will unfold. Further Shamanic Counseling and treatments including an extraction is sometimes helpful.
