Town of Kickapoo, Vernon County, Wisconsin

NEWS, VIEWS, AND INFORMATION ABOUT PROPERTY RIGHTS IN THE FREE AND INDEPENDENT TOWN OF KICKAPOO

This page is an effort to provide information about what is happening in the Town of Kickapoo. The rulemaking process requires an informed public willing to participate in community government. Those weakening our property rights, even for what they consider good reason, are organized and well funded - they use our tax dollars.

The Town of Kickapoo entered into a smart growth spending adventure by signing a contract to develop a comprehensive land use plan in 2003. This might have led to land takings, loss of property value, further land use restrictions, and erosions of the democratic process.

QUOTES

"I want a date for the prom, and I ask someone in my poly-sci class, but she’s all ‘nooo, that’s soooo inappropriate,’ but I really want her to come, ’cause I have her best interests at heart, so I tell her that she has to come to the prom with me, because there are lots of bad dates out there, and it’s my duty to protect her. She says that she doesn’t need protection. I say sorry, that’s not really an option. She tells me to get lost. I say that if you don’t want to obey me, there will be consequences. She gets really mad and tells me to stop threatening her. I say I am not threatening her, I am just governing her, and if she doesn’t obey me, I’ll be forced to take her cat. She calls me a little creep and storms off."   Stefan Molyneux

What most people really object to when they object to a free market is that it is so hard for them to shape it to their own will. The market gives people what the people want instead of what other people think they ought to want. At the bottom of many criticisms of the market economy is really lack of belief in freedom itself.

The essence of political freedom is the absence of coercion of one man by his fellow men. The fundamental danger to political freedom is the concentration of power. The existence of a large measure of power in the hands of a relatively few individuals enables them to use it to coerce their fellow men. Preservation of freedom requires either the elimination of power where that is possible, or its dispersal where it cannot be eliminated.  --from "The New Liberal's Creed: Individual Freedom, Preserving Dissent Are Ultimate Goals," May 18, 1961 Milton Friedman

The State of Wisconsin passed a comprehensive planning law in 2000 to compel municipalities to create comprehensive plans.  from Richland County's municipal plans as produced by its planner the Southwest Regional Planning Commission

...planning leads to dictatorship because dictatorship is the most effective instrument of coercion and the enforcement of ideals and, as such, essential if central planning on a large scale is to be possible. "The Road to Serfdom" F.A. Hayek

A man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding. When it is not, he takes his mind off his own meaningless affairs by minding other people's business. Eric Hoffer

The trade-off between freedom and security, so often proposed so seductively, very often leads to the loss of both.  Christopher Hitchens

We must recognize that we can never have a meaningful debate, or reach any viable conclusions from one, if our terms are not laid out and rigidly and unalterably defined beforehand.  Sean Corrigan

This page is dedicated in memory of the Kickapoo Valley families who were forced off of their farms to make way for the LaFarge Dam. This government vision was a nightmare for these families. The dam was not built and the federal government eventually gave their land to Wisconsin and the Ho-chunk tribe. It has become the Kickapoo Valley Reserve park.
