PreCalc                  11/27: Review of rational expressions, nth root, and exponential models

Part A: Once again, here is your third review of rational expressions…you will have a non-calculator quiz on this material:

a)

b) 2/3

c) 243-2/5

d) 10247/10

e) 512-9

f) 29

g) 40965/6

h) -3/4

i) 10243/5

j)

k)

l) 128-4/7

Part B: Calculator problems involving exponential models…these are samples of the problems you will see…

1) Since elk meat is fast becoming a new trend in meat products, farmers north of Hayward, WI, are changing from dairy herds to elk farms.  Six years ago they collectively purchased 42 elk and they are now looking at a population of 102 elk.

a)     Find the growth rate of the elk.

b)    Create an exponential equation that models the elk population.

c)     If the farms can only sustain 210 elk, how long before they will have to “harvest” the elk?

2) A computer industry spokesperson has predicted that the number of subscribers to Microsoft Network, a new internet provider, will grow exponentially for the first 5 years.  Microsoft had 100,000 subscribers after 6 months and 350,000 subscribers after 12 months.

a)     Find an exponential equation that models this situation.

b)    How many subscribers will there be after 5 years?

c) When will they have 12 million subscribers?
