Function Characteristics

 

Most of the curriculum of Algebra II is the study of functions.  Today and tomorrow, we are going to review the characteristics of each of the functions.  Later on, we are then going to explore these functions by collecting real data and finding which function best models the data set that we have collected.

Given each graph, you are to state the general equation for each function and write down 4 characteristics that are specific to that function.  You may use your notebook from last year and any textbooks that are available in the room.  I have done a sample for the linear functions.

 

1) Linear                                  General Equation: y = mx + b   

Characteristics:

  • “m” is the slope and “b” is the y-intercept
  • domain and range are all reals
  • slope can be positive, negative, zero, or undefined
  • it crosses the y axis at one point
