Dripping Faucet Internet Project

Water faucet leaks can cost many of us a good amount of money. Each month many Americans pay a water bill that is based on the amount of water usage. For this project, we are going to investigate the amount of water that is wasted based on the size of the leak.

____ Step 1) Log into the network

____ Step 2) Go to the Students folder and double click on the Netscape icon

____ Step 3) You will see a login screen, type in your login name for the user name, press TAB and for the password, enter your student ID number that is on your student ID card. (High School students: If you do not have your student ID card with you, use your social security number)

____ Step 4) In Netscape, at the Netsite location, type in the following web address:

http://www.cityhall.lima.oh.us/util/wdsub4.htm

____ Step 5) Read the webpage and scroll down to where they have the chart on the various size leaks. Each one of you will collect data for a different leak. Select which leak you are going to do and enter it in the space provided: ______________________

____ Step 6) Make a chart for the first 10 days of the month indicating the total number of gallons of water that leaked. Enter your data in the table below:

Day

____ Step 7) Write an equation for the total number of gallons leaked. Enter it in the space provided:

y = ___________________________

____ Step 8) Minimize Netscape, go to the Algebra folder and open it. Double click on the Graphical Analysis folder. Enter your data into the Data Table Window. A graph should appear in the Graph Window. When you are done entering in your data, click once on the Graph Window to make the window blue. Go up to Analyze on the tool bars and go down to Automatic Curve Fit. Click on Linear, click ok, then click ok again. In the Graph Window, double click where is say X vs Y and enter in a title for your graph. Click on the Data Table Window and double click on the x at the top of your data. Enter in the title for your x values, do the same for the y values. Print out the graph. If you need to save it, go to file, save as, change your directory to the "h" drive by double clicking on h: and then double click on your login name, name your file "faucet" and click ok.

Once you have your data collected and graphed, you are to write a report about your results. The report will be word processed.

Your report will include the following:

  1. A title page with the name of your project, your name, the class, the date, and the instructor’s name
  2. an opening paragraph explaining what your project is about
  3. an inserted table with the data that you collected
  4. a paragraph explaining how you got your equation…be sure to include what your equation is within the paragraph
  5. a paragraph discussing whether y is proportional to x and why
  6. a paragraph explaining which way do you think it is easier to see the amount of water being wasted….by using a graph, table, or equation
  7. a summary paragraph

The project is worth 100 points and is due on Friday, Nov. 13 at 3:30 pm. I will have an evaluation sheet for you later.
