Pastoral Paragraph:  On behalf of the entire staff at St. Charles Parish I wish

all of you and your families a most blessed New Year.  May 2012 bring you much joy,

happiness and good health.  Paraphrasing the first reading for today from the book of

Numbers: “May God bless you and keep you!  May God’s face shine upon you, and be

gracious to you!  May God look upon you kindly and give you peace!”

While many people start taking down their Christmas decorations on New Year’s,

the Christmas Season actually continues for one more week.  Next Sunday is the Feast

of the Epiphany and the Season ends on Monday, January 9 when we celebrate the

Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord.  With Christmas and New Year’s falling on Sunday’s

this year the Church calendar is running a little unusual.  May this entire Season be a

special time when we recall with much love the birth of our Lord – the one who is love.

Thank you to the many people who helped make our Christmas celebration so

beautiful!  Thank you also to Father Robert Monti who was home for a Christmas visit

and celebrated daily weekday Masses for us.  It’s always a pleasure to have Father

        Monti with us!

Mary and I wish to thank in a special way all those who remembered us with cards

and gifts of goodies over Christmas.  Our Christmas celebration with our family was most

enjoyable.  We were able to be with all our children and grandchildren during the week

and on Christmas Day in the evening we gathered with extended family.  It was particularly

wonderful to have my sister Lori with us.  She was determined to come home for Christmas

between her chemo therapy treatments.  Christmas Eve was a little emotional for her but

she was in great spirits on Christmas Day.  Lori looks positively wonderful and you wouldn’t

know she is battling cancer if not for her hair loss – but even with that she was sporting

some cute hats!  We continue to pray earnestly for her benefit and I continue to ask for

your prayers for her, too.  I firmly believe they have helped a great deal, and Lori has asked

that I extend her gratitude to you for them.

Happy New Year everyone!  God bless!

            Deacon Richard

Religious Education Classes (CCD)  Resume this Wednesday evening, January 4, from

6:45 pm to 8:15 in the school.

PTO Meeting  Mark your calendars for the next PTO meeting this Wednesday evening,

January 4 at 7:00 pm.  The major topics will be the February supper and the upcoming carnival.

Snow Removal  Anyone willing to assist Steve Woodhouse with snow removal around the church

will be most welcome.  Typically Steve starts early in the morning (5:30-6:00 am) so it is away from

the building before school and before the Village plows do the parking lot.  Any assistance will be

greatly appreciated.  For more information call Steve at 689-2440.  Thank you!

St. Charles Parish 150th Anniversary Celebration: 2012 will mark the 150th

Anniversary of St. Charles Parish.  Bishop Callahan will be here on Saturday, August 4 at the 4:00

Mass to help us formally recognize this important milestone.  We’ll have preparations to make as

the year progresses, but mark your calendars now as a “save the date.”

Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Please join us in observing First Saturdays as our Lady requested at Fatima to obtain peace

for the world. On January 7, 2012 at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe beginning at 11 a.m.,

Fr. Peter Damian M. Fehlner, F.I. will give a presentation on Our Blessed Mother. The Holy Rosary

will follow at 11:45 a.m., with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at 12:15 p.m. in the Shrine

Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

End of Calendar Year Charitable Contributions: As the end of the calendar

year approaches we wanted to remind you that charitable contributions must be applied

to the year in which they are received. The only exception would be that when a check

is mailed: it is applied to the year the check is postmarked, even if it is received in the

next calendar year. Remember, if the donor wants to claim the contribution as a

charitable deduction for income tax purposes, then the donor must relinquish control

of the funds before it is technically a contribution. Therefore, if the donor has not

mailed it by year-end, no matter what date is on the check, he/she hasn't really given

up control (per the IRS).  Additionally the IRS states that a mailed contribution must

have been postmarked on or before December 31st which proves that control was

given up by the end of the year. A complication for this upcoming End of Year is

that December 31st falls on a Saturday and January 1st falls on a Sunday. This

means the collections for those two days need to be segregated in the correct calendar

       year for accurate donor acknowledgement.
