Offering of the Cup, the Blood of Christ, at the Weekend Masses: Many Parishes offer both the Eucharist Host and the Cup at Communion, and some of the faithful present then receive both. The Eucharistic Minister offers the Cup stating: The Blood of Christ and the person carefully takes and returns the Cup responding “Amen.” Here at St Charles, the Cup has not been offered for some time. The priest is required to participate in both, but it is optional for the other Mass attendees. Certain mandatory Words of the Mass at Consecration encourage use of the Cup: “Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood…” Also, one of the four responses to “Let us proclaim the mystery of faith” is as follows: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. For these reasons, I asked the Pastoral Council for their advice whether we could try offering the Cup for a period of time on weekends. They were not opposed. So, for the Weekend Masses beginning February 9 and 10, the Cup will be offered. Two extra Eucharistic Ministers will be needed for well-attended Masses, and the Cup requires any left over to be immediately consumed, and the Cups carefully purified - these can be accomplished smoothly. Again, the Church teaches that taking of the Cup is optional for those other than the priest, and thus there is no less holiness by not taking the Cup. But for those with a spirituality that is aided by the Cup, it would be available. After a few months, we can evaluate if the Cup being available to all has added to the holiness and thanksgiving to the Father through the Son at our Weekend Masses.
Diocesan Filming of TV Mass We received the following Thanks from the Diocesan Office of Sacred Worship for our Parish participation in the January 10 filming of the TV Masses to be aired today January 20th and next Sunday January 27, both at 9:30 AM on Channel 19 and across the Diocese:
“Dear Father Witucki and Ellen: Thanks so much for participating in the Televised Masses last night. You both seemed a bit hesitant when I first asked, but you had absolutely no reason to be so. I thought the filming went great and all involved carried out their roles wonderfully. I hope that all of your people enjoyed themselves and that you will consider participating again. All the best, Chris Carstens”
Mr. Carstens gave us $50 which we will give to the Missions. The Celebrant Fr Hirsch was complimentary also and I add my appreciation and thanks to our people for their participation and representing St Charles so well. St Charles parishioners do celebrate the Mass in a very holy way, and everyone did indeed carry out their roles wonderfully. I draw special attention to our Music Team led by Ellen Umberger, Cantors Cindy Monroe, Heather Woodhouse, and Maggie Russell, and backed up by choir members – they carried the heaviest burden, and were excellent. Thanks to Frex for organizing participation.

A Catholic Youth Group from Winona will join us at the 10 AM Mass Next Sunday January 27.
Fr Schulte Cemetery Memorial: The Cemetery Committee has ordered a beautiful Stone & Carving in Memorial of Fr Schulte for installation in the spring at a cost of $9,000. This will add to the beauty and sacredness of the Cemetery. Donations can be mailed to the parish or included in the collection basket identified as for the Memorial. Total donations to-date: $8450. Any donations in excess of $9,000 will be used for perpetual care.
Natural Family Planning (NFP) Classes on Sunday afternoons January 20, February 10, and March 2, from 2:30-4:30 PM at Franciscan Skemp Hospital in the Lang Conference Room.
Used School Books: The St. Charles School has several boxes of text books that are either outdated or no longer in use. A recycling center for these books called “Books for Africa” is in St. Paul, MN. If anyone in the parish would be traveling that way in the near future and would be interested in taking them with, please contact the school office. Otherwise, they will end up in the dumpster as the school has limited space and getting them to the recycling center would help others in Africa. (Lori George 648-2024)
Adopt A Door Program (bathroom doors): We have $1550 pledged toward the $2700 cost. Anyone interested in helping out can contact Lori George at 608-648-2024.
Church Bulletin: Please forward your information for the church bulletin to the St. Charles School office by Wednesday of each week at 689‑2642 or stcharle@mwt.net
