Pastoral Paragraph: On this feast of Epiphany, the manifestation of our Lord to the whole

world through the worship of the Three Wise Men, I wish to share with you the final reflection from

the book I was using for my Advent-Christmas meditations.  It is written by Diane Lopez Hughes

and was published by Pax Christi:

If you were one of the Magi, what would have been your journey – not just your travels –

to see the Christ child?  Would you have questioned whether following the star made sense?

Would you have had the insight not to believe Herod’s words that he wanted to know the

location of the child so that he could pay him homage and found another road home,

instead of reporting back to him as he requested?  Would you have been open to the

miracle of a star in the sky marking the place below where the Christ child lay in a manger?

With your own prestigious role in life, would you have bowed down and given such a richness

of gifts to this baby in the stable?

Would you have understood – and accepted – that this revelation of God was meant for all

humankind?  Would you have experienced this as a deepening of your relationship with God?

I imagine that, like us, the Magi were a hope-filled people.  That in some way they realized

that they were a part of something new and exciting.  That they illuminated their experience

with truth, and love, humbling themselves to bow down before the Light of the world,

trusting in the spiritual value of the awesome encounter.

It is genuinely up to us to make our journey – not just our travels – an abundant and

meaningful part of our lives.  This journey is never made alone: community is an essential

factor in its promise.  And if we refuse to include all of our brothers and sisters, and all of

creation, in our journey of peace and justice we have destroyed the gift that God places so

gently, so lovingly into our hands.

As Isaiah (60:1) proclaims, we can rise up in splendor.  Our light – the light of hope

throughout the world – has truly come.  Christ’s glory shines upon us all.

May you and your families benefit from the joys and blessing of this holy Christmas Season

throughout the New Year!
