Pastoral Paragraph: Registration for Religious Education classes (CCD) will continue on Sunday, October 2 after Mass. Classes will begin this Wednesday evening, October 5 from 6:45 PM – 8:15 PM. Families may register on Wednesday prior to classes. The Religious Education fee will be $25 per student with a family maximum of $50. The class schedule for this fall will be:
We are inviting parents to join us for these Wednesday evening sessions. For parents and students in grades 3-8 we would invite everyone to gather in the gym for a special topics presentation, then the children will go to their classrooms and the parents will receive information on what dimensions of the religious education material they may support during the next couple of weeks. Students in grades 1-2 and 9 will go directly to their classrooms as they will have focused direction on preparation for the sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.
In continuing some information on the revisions in language we’ll be experiencing in the Mass beginning on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, we might legitimately wonder “how” or “who” decides to make these changes. Following the Second Vatican Council in 1963 the bishops in several English-speaking countries commissioned a Vatican-approved organization known as the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL) to prepare preliminary translations of the mass. The translations are reviewed, modified, and approved by each country’s conference of bishops and then sent to Rome for final approval. The revisions we’ll experience in a couple of months reflect continuing work by the ICEL, the bishops, and the Vatican. With the new translation some of the music we use will also change. Perhaps the most notable will be in the Gloria. Composers and music publishers have been developing new musical settings – some are revised; others are entirely new. I accompanied Ellen Umberger and Cindy Monroe to a “new music” workshop last Saturday and we experienced some of the new settings. Since our parish community seems to have a good music repertoire and ability to pick-up music quickly, I don’t think we should have any consternation or trouble with the transition.
On Sunday October 23 Pope Benedict XVI will canonize as a saint, Blessed Father Luigi Guanella. While many Catholics around the world may simply smile and say “that’s very nice,” for us in Genoa this is a most wonderful occasion as Father Guanella is from the Campodolcino area of Italy which is the area from where many of our founding families and settlers immigrated many years ago. Among the familiar names of Father Guanella’s family tree are Trussoni, Gianoli, Venner, Monti, Tully, Levi, Curti, and Gilardi. One of our seminarians for our diocese, Alan Guanella (St. James Parish, La Crosse), is studying in Rome and is also a decendent of the new saint. This past August several of our parish members went to a family reunion in Campodolcino and returned with the gift of a painting of St. Guanella for us. On October 23 we want to join in a particular way with the joy of the universal church as Father Guanella is canonized. We’ll have a special blessing of the painting of St. Guanella at the 10:00 Mass followed by a pot-luck luncheon in the gym. Of course, everyone is invited and urged to attend - you don’t need to be on the family tree! For more information please contact Bill Trussoni or Gary Venner.
We will soon be getting out information on the Diocesan Annual Appeal that will be conducted during October.
