Pastoral Paragraph:  A couple of weeks ago Mary and I learned that my youngest sister, Lori, was diagnosed with cancer.  She had extensive surgery this past Wednesday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.  We were pleased that she tolerated the 5 hour procedure very well but the results were less than we had hoped.  She has ovarian cancer and it had spread to lymph nodes as well as to her spleen, which they also removed.  We are planning to go to Des Moines Friday (11/4) to be with her.  She’ll have a long fight ahead of her as they are planning some very aggressive treatments.  Some of you may have met her as she was here visiting at the 4th of July Picnic.  Medical science has advanced so immensely in this area and we continue to be optimistic and confident.  More importantly we rely on the power of prayer and our Lord’s compassionate intercession.  I would ask your prayers as well for Lori’s benefit. We wish to welcome new parishioners Heath Zink and Natalie Kramer of Stoddard.  We also welcome through Baptism their daughter Lydia Jeanne who will be baptized on Sunday. The Diocesan Annual Appeal is continuing and I want to sincerely thank those of you who have made responses for the benefit of our parish!  Please see the update below.            Deacon Richard

Aquinas High School Congratulations to the October Student of the Month: Freshman – Avery McLain.

The New Translation of the Roman Missal will be implemented on the First Sunday of Advent. We have included in this week’s bulletin many of the prayers that will have changes.  Some of the differences will be obvious immediately, others are more subtle.  Those of us who began saying the Mass prayers by heart long ago will need to rely on printed texts again, at least for a while.  We will have printed cards in the pews for quick reference.  In the early months of the transition, we may find it more challenging to pray with one voice as people adjust to the new texts and gradually commit them to their hearts.  The changes in translation are more significant for the prayers said by the priest at Mass and most priests are studying the new texts to be ready for the First Sunday of Advent.  For most people the unfamiliar is always uncomfortable, at least at first.  It is completely normal to feel uncomfortable as you begin studying and reading the new texts.  Taking steps to become more familiar with the texts can help a great deal.  At the same time, be open to the possibility that you will find things to appreciate in the rich language of the new texts.  The more you read them and study them and pray them, the more familiar and comfortable they will become and the more you will appreciate the theological depth they convey

Diocesan Annual Appeal – We are the Diocese! We are very pleased with the number of gifts/pledges that have already been processed toward our parish goal of $11,640.  As of this past week we have had $7,350.00 gifted or pledged which represents about 63% of the goal. There is still plenty of time to make your gift or pledge.  No gift is too small, and the pledge option provides a way to make a modest monthly gift have greater impact.  Thank you for your participation!

Church Bulletin Please forward your information for the church bulletin to the St. Charles School office by Wednesday of each week at 689-2642 or stcharle@mwt.net
