Lent: We gathered on Ash Wednesday as a parish community for the mark of ashes on our forehead to not proclaim our holiness, but rather to acknowledge that we are a community of sinners in need of repentance and renewal. We all took the mark of ashes because of our need for the grace of God to reach eternal life – so the young child and the parent and the grandparent all took the ashes as an acknowledgement for God to be the priority in our life. Lent is a call for further conversion to holiness, a turning back to the Lord with whole-heartedness, a renewal of our baptismal promises to reject sin and profess our faith in Jesus. And, Lent is the time to do so, a season of prayer, alms and good deeds, and fasting, an acceptable time to God for making progress in our eternal salvation.
Lenten Regulations:
2. In addition to abstaining from meat, Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday, until they celebrate their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one meal unless necessary to maintain strength.
Why fast? Because we are weak, are wills are weak – we need to regain control of ourselves. Society, advertising, and our own passions tempt us with sin and many others things that, in excess, are very harmful to ourselves, and we frequently obsess on the wrong things. Critics are skeptical that giving up a meal, abstaining from meat is meaningful to us or to God. However, discipline is a learned habit – we must be at work on time, our children must come to school on time, we must pay attention and practice to learn and improve – the little things are surprisingly very important in human success. So also, in spiritual success – we must do and not do the things as God has instructed – thus we must have discipline to regain control of our lives and desires, and overcome bad habits, and replace with thoughts and activities that God has recommended to us. Fasting is a simple thing to show us that we lack control and discipline of ourselves, and thus need God’s help and our own self-knowledge.
Wednesday Stations of the Cross & Benediction at 7:00 PM During Lent, we will have Stations of the Cross & the Benediction Blessing on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM.
CCD/Confirmation Classes this Week: Classes continue this Wednesday, February 13 at 6:45 PM at the school.
Offering of the Cup, the Blood of Christ, at Masses beginning February 9 and 10: Many Parishes offer both the Eucharist Host and the Cup at Communion, and some of the faithful that are present receive both. The Eucharistic Minister offers the Cup stating: The Blood of Christ and the person carefully takes and returns the Cup responding “Amen.” Here at St Charles, the Cup has not been offered for some time. The priest is required to participate in both, but it is optional for the other Mass attendees. Certain mandatory Words of the Mass at Consecration encourage use of the Cup: “Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood…” Also, one of the four responses to “Let us proclaim the mystery of faith” is as follows: When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory. For these reasons, I asked the Pastoral Council for their advice whether we could try offering the Cup for a period of time on weekends. They were not opposed. So, for the Weekend Masses beginning February 9 and 10, the Cup is offered. Two extra Eucharistic Ministers will be needed for well-attended Masses, and the Cup requires any left over to be immediately consumed, and the Cups carefully purified. Again, the Church teaches that taking of the Cup is optional for those other than the priest, and thus there is no less holiness by not taking the Cup. But for those with a spirituality that is aided by the Cup, it is available. After a few months, we can evaluate if the Cup being available to all has added to the holiness and thanksgiving and worship to the Father, through the Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit at our Weekend Masses.
