Offering of the Cup, the Blood of Christ, at Next Weekend Masses, February 9 and 10:  Many Parishes offer both the Eucharist Host and the Cup at Communion, and some of the faithful that are present receive both. The Eucharistic Minister offers the Cup stating:  The Blood of Christ and the person carefully takes and returns the Cup responding “Amen.”   Here at St Charles, the Cup has not been offered for some time.  The priest is required to participate in both, but it is optional for the other Mass attendees.  Certain mandatory Words of the Mass at Consecration encourage use of the Cup:  “Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood…”  Also, one of the four responses to “Let us proclaim the mystery of faith” is as follows:  When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, Lord Jesus, until you come in glory.  For these reasons, I asked the Pastoral Council for their advice whether we could try offering the Cup for a period of time on weekends.  They were not opposed.  So, for the Weekend Masses beginning February 9 and 10, the Cup will be offered.  Two extra Eucharistic Ministers will be needed for well-attended Masses, and the Cup requires any left over to be immediately consumed, and the Cups carefully purified - these can be accomplished smoothly.  Again, the Church teaches that taking of the Cup is optional for those other than the priest, and thus there is no less holiness by not taking the Cup.  But for those with a spirituality that is aided by the Cup, it would be available.  After a few months, we can evaluate if the Cup being available to all has added to the holiness and thanksgiving to the Father through the Son at our Weekend Masses.

ST Charles School Wins Bible Bowl:   Last Wednesday night January 30th at Aquinas, Brandon George (3rd grade) Nick Malin (4th grade) Isaac Trussoni (5th grade) and Emil Walleser (6th grade) defeated much bigger schools in a contest of religious and scripture knowledge.  Congratulations!  We are very proud of our school achievement – thank you teachers and parents.

St. Charles Preschool & Kindergarten Round-Up for children 2 and older is scheduled for Thursday, February 21 from 4 – 6 PM at the St. Charles School.  Parents will have an opportunity to sign up their child for a preschool screening appointment scheduled for March 6th.  The screening will assist parents in understanding their child’s particular development stage, and provide an opportunity to ask questions and discuss concerns regarding their child’s development.
