The following Scrip information was also included in the family folders this week.

Scrip is a term that means "substitute money".

When families purchase scrip, they're purchasing negotiable gift certificates that are used just like cash.  SCRIP is issued by national and local retailers where many of us already shop.  These merchants want to support non-profit organizations like St. Boniface and in return ask us to support them by shopping with SCRIP at their stores.  Our families can use SCRIP to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing and other essentials.

How does SCRIP generate revenue for St. Boniface?

The Great Lakes Scrip center acts on behalf of St. Boniface to purchase large amounts of SCRIP from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers.  Because the SCRIP is purchased up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount.  St. Boniface buys the SCRIP from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount and re-sells the certificates for full face value.  The bulk of the discount is retained by St. Boniface.

Are there any restrictions on the gift certificates?

Each retailer sets their discounts and rules.  Some retailers, like JC Penny, allow families to pay off their JC Penny credit card with SCRIP if they do it in person at a store.  Some gift certificates expire or start charging a monthly fee if they show no activity after a set number of months.  Complete rules, discounts, and denominations for each retailer can be found at www.glscrip.com .
