Bergen Fire Department
Public
Protection Classification (PPC) Change
Recently
the Village of Stoddard and Stoddard/Bergen Fire Department received results
from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) indicating the community’s fire
suppression delivery system is vastly improved. The improvement, reflected
by a rating schedule or classification number for the Fire Department, has been
lowered from a Class 7 to a Class 4. This ISO rating can play a big part
in setting commercial, contents, homeowner, crop and rental insurance rates.
Why is this important!
The
ISO (http://www.iso.com/) is a private agency
supported by the insurance industry and other members for the purpose of
establishing Public Protection Classifications, which are one of many elements
used to develop fire insurance rates for individual properties. The ISO
maintains a schedule that reflects the major elements of a municipality’s fire
department and fire suppression system, which includes the water supply.
The schedule involves 10 classifications from 1 (the best) to 10 (the least
protected). The rating is primarily used to determine a basis for
commercial fire insurance premiums but, some companies also use the rating to
create differentials in residential premiums. Every 10 to 15 years
communities are rated. Anytime a community can prove to ISO they can
improve their grade, ISO will come out and re-rate the community.
This has been a goal of the Village and the Fire Department for several years,
to improve the overall water supply and its distribution and make significant
improvements in the equipment used by the fire department to suppress fires with
the available water supply.
Property
owners and residents of this community have been and will continue to pay for
improvements to the water supply and the fire department through tax dollars.
Hopefully most if not all residents can reap some reward from that investment
through insurance savings as a result of the classification change for our
community. To take advantage of any dollar savings you should check
with your present home or business insurance company and make them aware of the
rating change for the Stoddard/Bergen Fire Department. Some companies use
their own rating criteria to establish premium charges and do not recognize
ISO’s system. In this case we urge people to shop around to find
subscribing insurers (those companies who use ISO) and compare rates.
Everyone should be aware that insurance rates have increased across the board
due to the vast amount of property loss from hurricanes and other disasters in
the United States. We hope any insurance cost increases are cancelled out
by the savings gained. A detailed table comparing residential
insurance costs versus ISO ratings is available on the Roar website http://www.mwt.net/~stod
For
rural property owners, the rating or classification change will not impact those
who reside or own property beyond 2000 feet of the last hydrant from the Village
of Stoddard. Properties within this zone (less than 2000 feet) do qualify.
Rural property owners within 5 miles of the fire department have an insurance
rating (PPC) of 7. Those owners 5 miles and greater in distance from the
fire department will automatically be given an insurance rating (PPC) of 10.
This
accomplishment is the result of a significant investment by taxpayers, local
government leaders and the fire department. Special thanks to Assistant
Chief Joe Pfaff for spearheading this activity along with the rest of the
members of the Stoddard/Bergen Fire Department who played a significant role in
meeting this objective.
Respectfully,
Daryl D. Steinke – Chief
Stoddard/Bergen Fire Department

The table below illustrates the savings in home owner's insurance premiums when your home is covered by a fire department with a better rating. A 10 rating means essentially no fire coverage and a 9 indicates minimal fire coverage. The lower the number the lower the cost of insurance. Business owners should see significant benefits from lowered ratings. Their savings continue all the way to a class 1 rating. If you own a $100,000 house, you would save $376 per year if your department improved from a 9 to a 7! Support your local Fire Department, it will save you money and may save your life! |

Thanks!
The
Stoddard Lions recently purchased a 25 foot freezer for the food pantry in
Stoddard. The freezer will be used to keep 1100 pounds of venison that
has been donated and processed at the Chaseburg locker. The Stoddard
food pantry is a joint effort between the Methodist and St. Matthews
churches.
