Eastern Bluebells Mertensia virginica
Eastern Bluebells (Mertensia virginica), also known as Virginia
Bluebells, are perennial plants native to moist woodlands and moist
bottom lands along streams. With nodding clusters of blue flowers in April and May, these plants grow 1-2 feet tall and are true ephemerals, with leaves yellowing and dying as the plant becomes dormant in early summer. Eastern Bluebells need moist soil during their active growing season. In a garden setting, plant them with ferns and other wildflowers which will fill in the spaces when the Bluebells die back.
