WVRQ-AM went on the air in 1958 as a 500 watt daytime station. The station was started by Parks and Lenora Robinson. In the early 1960’s the station was upgraded to 1,000 watts. WVRQ – FM went on the air in 1967, and in 1974 began airing a country music format. Both stations have always based their success on coverage of local news, sports, and community events. Over the years, WVRQ has broadcast reports from Russia, China, South Korea, the White House and other places covering local people. The station has broadcast from Cape Canaveral Florida every time local astronaut Mark Lee of Viroqua has made a trip on the space shuttle. In 1985 the Robinson’s retired and their son, David, who started at the stations as a teenager, took over with a veteran staff. Many of the current WVRQ staff members have been working there since the 1960’s and 1970’s, and some as far back as 1958. |
