Dear JSHS Educators:
The 35th Annual Western Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Junior Science and Humanities Symposium will be held September 18-20, 2005, at the Pigeon Lake Field Station near Drummond, Wisconsin. The symposium will begin with registration at 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening, September 20th, and conclude at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20th after lunch and the awards ceremony.
Schools will need to arrange transportation to and from Pigeon Lake Field Station. Mileage to and from the symposium will not be reimbursed. Teachers and students are covered by our insurance from the time they arrive in camp until they leave for home.
The tentative registration list for this year’s symposium includes 6 schools, 28 participants and 10 potential presenters. The preliminary agenda will be: Chris Cold, from the Wisconsin DNR speaking on Sunday evening; field trip to Madeline Island/Big Bay State Park on Monday, with presentation of papers at the Ashland Visitor Center (a computer will be provided for PowerPoint presentations); awards ceremony after lunch, with departure afterwards on Tuesday. As we have agreed, there will be a $20 fee per participant; this fee is nonrefundable. If you have not paid your fees, please do so at your earliest convenience. Make payment out to UW-La Crosse and return it to the following address: Attn: Karen Langaard, Continuing Education, 205 Morris Hall, 1725 State St., La Crosse, WI 54601.
Enclosed is a general information sheet that I would like you to distribute to each student participant. For presenters, we also have included a copy of the judge’s score sheet as well as the JSHS abstract form. This form must be completed and sent to the JSHS office by the indicated deadline.
The top five student presenters will be awarded: 1) an expense-paid trip to the National Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (there are six winners picked with the sixth place being an alternate in case one of the five cannot go), 2) an invitation to present their original research investigation at the National JSHS awarded to the two top finalists, and 3) a total of $4,500 undergraduate, tuition scholarships, awarded at $2,000, $1,500, and $1,000 levels respectively, to each of the top three finalists. The top five winners will also receive a $125 book scholarship to UW‑La Crosse. The sponsoring teacher of their selected national student presenter will also accompany the winner to the Nationals with expenses paid by Western Wisconsin-Upper Michigan JSHS.
If you have any questions regarding the symposium, please call (608)785-6508. We look forward to another successful symposium
Sincerely,
Dr. Tim Gerber
