Genetics Booklet

From "Round vs. Wrinkled" to Designer Genes

The genetics booklet is due when we finish our study of genetics.
Everything should be typed - double spaced.
Use class time wisely, especially if you don't have a computer at home.

This booklet should contain the following information:*

Vocabulary, questions, labs, major project & other things as they come up.

* Please check requirements - subject to changes

Vocabulary:  I will post words for each chapter.  Start with Ch. 12.

Chapter 12   Mendel and Meiosis

Questions:

1. Explain why  Mendel is called the Father of Genetics - give examples Quiz

2. Explain what a Punnett Square is all about with an example. Quiz

3. Describe the structure and function of DNA

4. Describe the importance of the processes in "The Central Dogma."

5. Describe incomplete dominance and sex linked modes of inheritance.

6. Why is a pedigree useful when studying inherited traits?

7. Describe how mutations could be both helpful and/or harmful.

8. Choose a physical trait and describe two ways that you might have inherited it.

9. Describe why we might want to know the make-up of the human genome.

The Human Genome

10.  Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis - describe the similarities and differences.
        - include how meiosis leads to genetic variation/diversity

Labs:

Mendel and his Punnett squares

  * Model species " Reebop" lab -- including certificate

  * DNA model (not this year)

  * Other labs that may arise

  * Genetics Novel      Assignment

Project: Complete one of the following:

Grading Rubric

Links to look at: Chromosome map    The Biology Project     Genetics 1

1. Examine a human genetic condition (either a disease or a disorder) using the Internet, library, current articles, etc., and prepare a report according to the specifications of the attached rubric.

Examples: Down syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, Tay-Sachs, etc.

2.  Extra credit:

Examine a current topic in genetics using the Internet, library, current articles, etc.,  and prepare a report according to the specifications of the attached rubric.

Examples: Cloning technology, genetic screening, Human Genome Project, gene therapy, etc.
