I have created 6 situations.  If you would like a copy, please e-mail me : jvolkman1@msn.com

Due to a large number of questions this summer at the Westby Nursery and Garden Center, you have been hired to investigate and help local residents in the Westby / Coon Valley / Chaseburg area solve the problems they have been having with various plants both indoors and outside. Your job as plant specialists is to assess the situation, determine the possible cause of the problem, and devise a solution.

Remember to look at the entire area and do a quick check of the landscape and history of the area for clues to the problem.

Your solution to the problem will consist of three parts:

  1. You must write down a summary of the situation and the possible problem for your supervisor Mr. Lallas.
  2. You must record a "scientific" proposal to solve the problem with information you have learned in your study of plants.
  3. You must role-play the interaction between you (the experts) and the person who has the problem or question. In other words, put your answer in simple terms so someone who has not taken Biology with the "plant man" may understand your suggestions.

Keep these things in mind:

  1. Cost to the customer versus the economic or personal benefit to the customer.
  2. The possible ecological impacts both positive and negative to the environment.
  3. If possible, use recycled materials (if needed in your solution).
  4. Not all of the situations may be resolved immediately (if you feel a long-term study is needed, you need to design an experiment to evaluate your suggestions or remedies to the situation).
