WBA State Finals at Osceola
August 18, 2007
The Chaseburg Coon Valley Blues began play in the 2007 WBA Tournament
against the La Crosse Athletics. The game started and by the 2nd inning, a
light rain was falling. CCV scored 1 run in the bottom of the third and the
Athletics scored 1 in the top of the 4th. Nick Jones started on the mound for
the Blues and pitched strong. The Blues added 3 runs in the 5th on a home
by Josh Schultz and a single run in the bottom of the 6th to lead 5-1.
The rain continued, the field got worse and by the top of the 7th, with the
Blues leading 5-1, the rain really started coming down. Wet or not, the
game continued and La Crosse scored 4 times in the top of the 7th to make
the score 5-4 and had the tying run on 2nd base with no outs, when the
umpires finally decided to delay the game due to the continuing rain.
When the game resumed, La Crosse scored again to tie the game at 5
and it remained that way until the bottom of the 8th inning. Ryan Manske
led off the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third when
the center fielder bobbled the ball. La Crosse tried to make a play on Manske
at third and the throw from the relay man went into the dugout, allowing
Ryan to score what turned out to be the winning run. Adam Wershofen
pitched three innings of shutout relief and also had 3 hits for the Blues.
Also leading CCV at the plate were Matt Hoff and Kevin Wagner who had
2 hits apiece. The Blues will play again on Saturday night in a semifinal.
