Military/Civilian Ball & Pie Social
A favorite of both participants and spectators at Boscobel's Civil War Weekend is the Saturday evening Military/Civilian Ball, held on Wisconsin Ave., in front of the Historic Boscobel Hotel. The popular Old Man River Band plays period music while a caller provides direction to authentic waltzes and reels. Anyone in period dress may join in this free activity. Spectators are encouraged to watch from lawn chairs or sit in the bleachers which are provided.
The evening festivities begin at 7:30 pm with an old-time pie and ice cream social in the Hotel. The music begins at 8:00 pm. At 9:45 pm, following a short intermission, a highlight of the evening is the Grand March. It begins with a line of couples walking the length of the dance area, then progressively pairing with other couples until they eventually form a column over 30 abreast marching up the main street. This march then breaks into a rousing dance to start the second set.
