From 'Camping':
I had to
admit my dad was one of the bravest people on Earth when he pulled onto
the construction area, kids and trailer in tow, and began to follow a ponderous
earth scraper. Higher and higher we climbed, rising up the grade with the
machine leading the head of our parade. At the top, Dad discovered a layer
of fresh gravel to one side and pulled onto it. Now we passed the earth
mover and I waved proudly. Workers with shovels stopped what they were
doing to watch us go by, crawling along behind a gravel truck dumping stone,
and a bulldozer pushing it smooth. But, eventually, even they moved to
the side and we continued along the bumpy, rocky, dirt path. Suddenly,
after a bump sent us to the ceiling and back down to the ground, the car
no longer would move. The engine whined, the tires spun, but we went nowhere.
