my mother was very sick and pass away last night.  I will

be gone today and Friday.  Please continue to work as we planned

on your questions and your Mitosis Project.  Since I will be gone

the plans will change a little.

1.  Project is not due on Monday so with the extra time you have put

in a little extra effort to make it a GREAT Project.  Be creative!  Stay away

from just making it a book report. I know you can do it.

2.  Quiz is postponed until next week - Not Monday or Tuesday

Centriole

Metaphase
Anaphase
Telophase

Why Aren’t Organisms Made of Just One Giant Cell?

1. Diffusion takes too long

2. There is only one nucleus in a cell, to hold a nucleolus, that produces ribosomes

3. Volume increases faster than surface area (Example of cubes on page 264)

What is a Chromosome?

A cell structure that carries the genetic information (p 266)

During cell division chromosome structure changes and chromosomes appear different at various stages

The two halves of a chromosome are called Sister Chromatids (they are exact copies) held together by a Centromere

Diagram of a Chromosome

Anaphase
Telophase

Interphase
Longest stage in the cell cycle
Divided into 3 parts
1. Cell growth and construction of new organelles

2. Copies of DNA are made
3. Growth and preparation for cell division

Prophase

Longest stage of mitosis

chromatin coils up to form visible chromosomes

The nucleus disappears

Centrioles move to opposite ends of the cell (animal only)

The Spindle begins to form, this helps separate chomatids

Metaphase

Chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers

They line up along the mid-line of the cell

This assures each new cell gets one copy of the genetic material

Anaphase

Centromere splits apart

Seperation of the sister chromatids

Spindle fibers shorten

Chromosomes are pulled apart

Telophase

Chromatids reach the opposite ends of the cell

Chromosomes unwind

Spindle breaks down

Nucleus is formed

Plasma Membrane is divided

Result

Two identical copies are formed

Called "daughter cells"

Interphase begins and the process repeats…..

And repeats…..

And Repeats…..

Assignment

Recently, the cloning process was reported to be carried out on human embryos.

Each of you write down what you found!

1.  Explain how scientists clone.

2.  Are you in favor of cloning?  If your partner and you disagree,

find someone who agrees with you and proceed.

3.  Find an article on Brave New Monkey.

How did ANDi get his name?

4.  What did you find in the article that supported your point of view?

This does not mean print out the whole article.  Remember the site address.

5.   Repeat what you did in Q#4. with  another article on cloning you found on the web.

6.  Question:   Should we have laws that control cloning? Explain

7.  What is gene therapy?  If a doctor told you and your wife that you had a

defective gene that might show up in your baby and cause a genetic defect,

would you allow gene therapy to avoid this?

Discuss cloning :  Pros and Cons

Please divide the board in 1/2 and list pros and cons to cloning.

Two people volunteer to write the pros and cons on the board

from the students who have an opinion to share.  Please contribute.

Don't argue but orderly discussion is encouraged from both sides!

You must support your idea with information you gathered yesterday

opposed to just your opinion.  Jot these down, might come in handy for the test!

Look ahead to Thurs. Review for test!!!!!  Are you ready?  NO NOTES !!

Special Report:  Britain approves Human Cloning 1/22/01

Assignment: Surf the net for details and jot down some facts and net addresses

Include what the new law will allow and why the old law was changed.

After our discussion in class yesterday and what you learned today,

have you changed your mind?  Why?  Why not?

Try this: Practice quiz    When you get there click on Cell Cycle

Trick is to correct the mistakes.  The fewer the guesses, the better your score!

The quiz is not working 100%.  It does not keep track of all of your guesses.  Try

it anyways and see how you do.
